Sound familiar?

2 people. 2 versions of the same problem.

Most couples who call our Jupiter office are not fighting about the dishes. They are fighting about whether they still matter to each other. It usually sounds like this.

One of you is thinking

“I have said it 100 times.”

  • I feel like a roommate, not a partner.
  • Every conversation turns into a fight, so I stopped starting them.
  • I do not know if I can trust them again.
  • If nothing changes by the end of the year, I am done.
The other is thinking

“Nothing I do is ever enough.”

  • I did not know it was this bad until they said the word “divorce.”
  • I shut down because I do not want to make it worse.
  • I made a mistake and I have apologized. What else can I do?
  • I want this to work. I just do not know how to show it.
Both of these are true at the same time. That is the starting point of couples therapy, not the problem with it.
Where are you right now?

3 places couples arrive from, and what we do differently for each

Pick the one that is closest. The plan, the pace and even who attends the first session change depending on the answer.

The quiet one

You do not fight. You just do not talk.

Parallel lives: work, kids, phones, sleep. No one is angry, which is what makes it hard to justify calling a therapist. This is the stage where couples therapy works fastest, because nothing has been broken yet, only neglected.

  • Both partners attend from session 1
  • Focus: rebuilding curiosity and time, not “fixing” anyone
  • Typical length: 8 to 12 sessions, then check-ins
The loud one

Same fight, different day.

The topic changes; the pattern does not. One pursues, one withdraws, both feel unheard. Couples in this stage usually arrive convinced the other person is the problem. The clinician’s first job is to show both of you the loop you are in, because the loop is the client.

  • Both partners attend; sessions are structured so nobody gets steamrolled
  • Focus: de-escalation first, then the needs underneath the fight
  • Typical length: 12 to 20 sessions
The crossroads

1 of you is not sure this should continue.

Maybe there was an affair. Maybe someone has quietly checked out. Ongoing couples therapy is the wrong tool here; it assumes both people want to fix it. Instead we use a short, focused format built for the decision itself: stay as is, separate, or commit to a defined 6-month attempt.

  • Mostly separate time with each partner, brief joint segments
  • Focus: clarity and confidence in the decision, not persuasion
  • Typical length: 1 to 5 sessions
What actually changes

The 4 things couples therapy works on

Every approach we use, from emotionally focused work to structured communication training, is aimed at 1 of these 4.

How you talk

Raising something without it becoming a fight. Listening without building your rebuttal. Small mechanics, big results.

How you repair

Every couple fights. The ones that last know how to come back within hours, not weeks. Repair is a skill, and it is teachable.

How you connect

Feeling chosen, not just tolerated. Rebuilding the small daily signals that say “I am still here” after they have gone quiet.

How you decide

Money, in-laws, kids, moving, a second chance. Making decisions together instead of one deciding and the other absorbing.

Setting expectations

What a couples session is, and is not

The biggest reason a partner refuses to come is a picture of what happens in the room. This is the real picture.

It is

  • Structured. The clinician runs the session, not the louder partner.
  • Balanced. Both people get airtime, on purpose, with a clock.
  • Practical. You leave with 1 thing to try this week.
  • Confidential, with rules you agree to at intake.

It is not

  • A trial. Nobody is found guilty.
  • 2 against 1. The therapist does not take a side.
  • Venting for an hour. Complaints are input, not the session.
  • A commitment to stay. Sometimes clarity is the outcome.

How to bring it up without starting the fight

Roughly 7 in 10 first calls to our office are made by 1 partner. If that is you, here is the wording that gets a “yes” most often, and what to do if it still gets a “no.”

  • Pick a calm moment, not the tail end of an argument.
  • Lead with you, not them. “I want us to be better” beats “you need help.”
  • Make it small. A free 15-minute call, not “we are going to therapy.”
  • If it is still a no, book an individual session. What you learn changes the dynamic on its own, and most partners join within a month.

Try saying this
“I do not want us to keep doing this. I found a practice in Jupiter that does a free 15-minute call first, no commitment. Would you do that one call with me?”
  1. Then stop talking. Let them answer.
  2. If they ask “what is wrong with us,” say: “Nothing that a lot of couples do not go through. I just want us to have someone in our corner.”
  3. If they say “we can fix this ourselves,” say: “Maybe. But we have been trying for a while. One call.”

Questions couples ask before calling

Couples therapy FAQ

What is couples therapy?

Couples therapy is treatment where both partners meet with a licensed clinician together. The client is the relationship, not either person. At FC PsychExperts sessions run 50 to 80 minutes and draw on evidence-based approaches for communication, conflict, trust and connection, matched to what the couple wants to change.

What if my partner does not want to come?

This is the most common question we get. You can start alone: an individual session helps you get clear on what you want to say, and many partners agree to attend once they hear it is not about blame. The office can also arrange a 15-minute call with the hesitant partner so they can ask their own questions first.

Can couples therapy help after an affair?

Yes. Rebuilding trust after infidelity is one of the most common reasons couples come to our Jupiter office. The work is structured: understanding what happened, managing the acute period, and deciding together what the relationship becomes next. It is not a place where 1 partner is put on trial.

Do you offer therapy for couples who are not sure they want to stay together?

Yes. When 1 or both partners are unsure, a short, focused format (often called discernment counseling) helps the couple reach a clear decision: stay as is, separate, or commit to a defined period of therapy. It is usually 1 to 5 sessions and is different from ongoing couples therapy.

Do you see unmarried, engaged or premarital couples?

Yes. Couples therapy at FC PsychExperts is for any 2 partners: dating, engaged, married, long-term, or co-parenting after separation. Premarital sessions focus on money, family, roles and conflict style before they become the fight.

How long does couples therapy take?

Focused work often shows change in 8 to 12 sessions. Rebuilding after a breach of trust typically takes longer, 3 to 6 months, and follows a staged plan. Discernment counseling is 1 to 5 sessions. Progress is reviewed together at set points.

Is what I say in couples therapy confidential from my partner?

Your clinician sets a clear confidentiality agreement at intake. Most couples therapists use a no-secrets policy, which means information shared in a one-on-one portion that affects the relationship may be brought into the joint work. You will know the rules before you start.

Can we do couples therapy online?

Yes. Sessions run in person at the Jupiter office or by secure video from anywhere in Florida. Partners can join from the same room or from separate locations, which many couples with different work schedules prefer.

How fast can we get a first appointment?

First couples sessions are usually available within the same week. Call (561) 834-5849 Monday to Friday 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM or Saturday 9 AM to 4 PM, or send the form on this page and the office calls back within 1 business day.

Do you accept insurance for couples therapy?

Fees and insurance options are confirmed when you call. Many insurers do not cover couples therapy as a standalone service; the office will tell you plainly what applies and can provide a superbill where reimbursement is possible.
