What happens in the first appointment?
Both of you, 80 minutes, with the clinician running the session. How the relationship started, what’s happening now, and what each of you wants from coming in. Nobody is asked to solve anything. It’s the first of 4 assessment appointments that happen before a plan is proposed.
Why do you see us separately before giving feedback?
Because a joint-only assessment shows the clinician the version of the relationship the 2 of you can produce together, and the gap between your 2 private accounts is usually the actual work. It’s also the only way to screen for safety properly, since nobody discloses fear of their partner with that partner in the room.
What gets written in our record, and can my partner read it?
Session notes covering what was worked on and the plan. If you’re self-pay the record can be kept as a couples record with both of you as the client. If you use insurance, the claim carries one partner’s name and diagnosis. Access rules depend on how the file is opened, so ask at intake which applies to you before your first session.
How long do you keep our records?
Florida requires a full record of services to be kept for 7 years after the date of your last contact, under Fla. Admin. Code R. 64B4-9.001. The statute itself doesn’t set a number. Fla. Stat. 491.0148 hands that decision to the board, which is why reading the statute alone leaves you without an answer.
Can something said in couples therapy end up in a custody case?
A written clinical record exists once it’s created, and a court can order its release. Under Fla. Stat. 491.0147 what you say is confidential, with narrow exceptions: your own written consent, an action you bring against the therapist, and a specific threat of serious bodily injury or death to an identified person the clinician judges imminent. Tell us on the first call if there’s an open or expected case, because Dr. Colet is court-appointed in the 15th Judicial Circuit and we check for conflicts before booking. Your treating clinician doesn’t write opinions for your case in any event.
We’re only in Florida from November to April. Can we finish in that time?
A November to April season is about 22 weeks. Focused communication work runs 8 to 12 sessions, so it fits with room to spare. A staged repair after a breach of trust runs 3 to 6 months and fits once if you start in the first weeks of the season. Starting that in February doesn’t work. If you’ll need sessions after you leave Florida, ask about the clinician’s licence before the first appointment, because a Florida licence covers you only while you’re in Florida.
Do both of us have to complete the assessment?
Yes, separately and without seeing each other’s answers. It’s scored on the difference between your 2 sets of responses, so 1 completed questionnaire tells the clinician very little.
Is the video session the same as coming in?
Same clinician, same session length, same confidentiality rules. Partners can join from 1 screen or from 2 different ones. The Jupiter office is at 210 Jupiter Lakes Blvd, Unit 4-201, just off Indiantown Road, and couples from the north county usually come in.
How fast can we get a first appointment?
First couples sessions are usually available within the same week. Call (561) 834-5849 Monday to Friday 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM or Saturday 9 AM to 4 PM, or send the form on this page and the office calls back within 1 business day.
Do you see unmarried, engaged or premarital couples?
Yes. Same format and the same 4 assessment appointments, with the focus set by what you’re working on rather than by marital status.
